Wow. After finishing this book, it makes me want to be a better person - forgiving, generous, loving. I was sad at the misunderstandings that affected Jean Valjean’s life, yet he continued to do good and look for the best in all despite some making false assumptions. I loved what he shared at the end of the book - a message we can all remember-

“Those Thénardiers were wicked. We must forgive them. Cosette, The time has come to tell you the name of your mother. Her name was Fantine. Remember that name: Fantine. Fall on your knees whenever you pronounce it. She suffered a great deal. And loved you very much. Her measure of unhappiness was as full as yours of happiness. Such are the distributions of God. He is on high, He sees us all, and He knows what He does in the midst of His great stars. Love each other dearly always. There is scarcely anything else in the world but that: to love one another.”

Love each other dearly always. No matter what.

Worth reading this lengthy book. And when finished, you will want to start all over again. Bravo, Victor Hugo!

*Deep sigh* That ride was WILD.

This behemoth contains some of the most incomparably beautiful, eloquent prose. By the end, I was in a deep, starry abyss and had no desire to claw my way out, though I was exhausted by the journey therein. The ending itself is a spectacular masterpiece. It is SPECTACULAR, and I feel changed by it.

However, 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. While I get that it’s an epic BEAST of a story, and it is—for me personally, the hours of tangential philosophizing are quite unnecessary. (Why an ENTIRE history of the Parisian sewer system, for that one scene of JV carrying Marius?) The sheer volume of these tangents is my only qualm.
