Oof! Took a while but definitely worth the effort. Admittedly some passages were a bit cryptic but still a remarkable and timeless book in all respects.

I don't think this was the best translation of Les Miserables. I listened to the audio version of this work and found it enchanting is parts and painful in others. Glad I did invest the time to get through it though.

This book is very long, at points has a nonlinear timeline, and sometimes wanders off to follow other characters with no immediate reason.
I spent the equivalency of 4+ days listening to the audiobook, sometimes at time & a half speed. If I wasn't listening while at work I would have stopped.
The first 3 or so hours were told from the priests point of view. Then the story picked up momentum with Jean Valjean, Fantine, & Inspector Javert. Once Marius is introduced the story starts drifting off.
By the last 10 hours I told my husband this could have been named the story of 3 virgins, as the story mostly focuses on Jean Valjean, Inspector Javert, & Marius Pontmercy.
The French Revolution is little more than a footnote in the story itself.
