I have never read another book like this. As someone who does not generally read a lot of non-fiction, I did not expect this book to grip me as hard as it did. Machado’s prose is unbelievable, her emotions and journey all palpably felt through the page. She seamlessly weaves together reality, works of fiction, and metaphor to illustrate her story as one in a long experience that has been going on for centuries. A must read for any AFAB person, but particularly those who might also exist at the intersections of race and/or queerness. The historic creators of the archive will not bury us forever. Stories like this one prove we can and will endure.

This is the most unique  memoir I have ever read. Brilliant, challenging, and harrowingly raw. I did not expect this non-linear shattering of perspective, dissecting events into many different genres and dissecting the genres themselves. Absolutely incredible.

LOTS of literary/cultural references that flew way over my head, mainly in terms of "chapter" titles and, maybe it's because of the ADHD troubles when listening to an audiobook without text, but there were some passages that I was confused about how they related to the story. Otherwise, I'm speechless; horrifying events that were beautifully written.

This was a gorgeous memoir. Compulsively readable from start-to-finish, Machado's penchant for lyricism and horrific elements makes for a creative, unique interpretation of the nonfiction structure. Her ability to express the corrosion of a relationship into intimate partner violence while acknowledging the complications of abuse in a queer relationship made me reflect deeply on the language we use to understand violence. An essential read from one of my favorite authors working today.
