I absolutely loved the language in this story, feeling the intensity of what goes on inside the mind of a human in pain and just the raw beauty of it all.

Tiresome format gives the impression that you’re deeply immersed in the story but really you’re just hovering over the surface the whole time, trying to make sense of the author’s disjointed writing style. When she’s actually telling her story it’s quite compelling, but it only lasts for a half page and then she’s off on another tedious tangent.

Brilliant and poised. This memoir is delicate, unnerving, sophisticated, and gut wrenching. Machado’s vignettes are displays of her unique talent and are deeply inspiring to readers and writers alike. While I think this would be hard to recommend given the content, it’s a memoir I know i’ll think about forever (think A Little Life adjacent).

Only reason it dropped to a 4.5 was because I felt some points the breaking of the fourth wall in mentioning her experience writing the memoir and putting it in social context are a bit repetitive. Otherwise stellar read!!!
