This book has been my most anticipated read since I finished The Stardust Thief. I re-read the first installment of the Sandsea trilogy which is something I’ve never done. I struggle with re-reading books so that says a lot about this series.  When I opened up The Ashfire King I was thrilled to see a recap of the previous book, which is something I would support more authors getting in the habit of with the series they’re writing.  That’s where my praise starts for this book but it doesn’t end there.

I loved being back with my favourite characters from the first book and being on the edge of my seat awaiting the return of my favourite Jinn.  Even the introduction of new characters throughout including the much anticipated use of birds in the story kept everything feeling fresh and exciting.  Azhar, of course, has my heart.  The way that Chelsea breathes life into these characters makes reading their stories immersive and one you hate to step away from.

Once I really got into the groove of reading, I did not want to put the book down and devoured it rather quickly.  I contemplated staying home from work when I was about 75% finished.  Perhaps I should have, because just when I thought I could breathe and relax, Chelsea turned the world on its head once again and now I eagerly await the final chapter of this trilogy.

The Ashfire King (Sandsea #2) by Chelsea Adbullah is highly entertaining and engaging and does not suffer from “middle book” syndrome. The second installment picks-up shortly after the events of the first (The Stardust Thief), with Loulie, Mazen, and Aisha falling into the Sandsea and finding themselves in the land of the jinn/ifrit, where they deal with magic, political intrigue, and mysteries that challenge their way of thinking. I appreciate that the author included a catch-up summary of book one, told in the form of a story. I wish more authors would include a “previously” segment in sequel installments.

The world-building is stellar. I enjoyed spending time in the jinn world, learning about the different types of jinn, their magic, histories and culture, political structure, and physical environment. The characters are well-developed, fully realized, and complex, each acting in accordance with their own personal code of conduct/ethics. Even characters that are antagonistic act in a manner that makes sense for them – even if their reasoning is faulty, their behavior is perfectly in character for them. I appreciate that Ms. Adbullah allows her protagonists make bad decisions or act poorly and have them deal with the consequences of those actions.

The writing style is lovely – lush and lyrical when it needs to be (especially when a character is telling a story) and direct at other times. The pacing is good, moving at a steady clip. And while the story did end on a cliffhanger (it is the second of a planned trilogy after all) the plot of the second installment came to a satisfactory conclusion.

I greatly enjoyed The Ashfire King and look forward to the next installment.

The Ashfire King by Chelsea Abdullah is a mesmerizing continuation of the Sandsea Trilogy that masterfully blends high-stakes adventure with rich, character-driven storytelling. Set in the collapsing realm of the jinn, the narrative follows merchant Loulie al-Nazari and banished prince Mazen bin Malik as they navigate political upheaval and ancient magic.

Abdullah's world-building is immersive, drawing inspiration from Middle Eastern folklore to create a setting that's both enchanting and some of my favorite storytelling. The characters are deeply developed, with personal growth and complex relationships that add emotional depth to the tale. This sequel not only expands the universe introduced in The Stardust Thief but also sets the stage for an epic conclusion. A must-read for fans of intricate fantasy and folklore-inspired narratives. Cannot wait for book three!

Thank you, NetGalley, and the publisher for the ARC. This is my honest review.

In The Ashfire King, a merchant and a prince must save a crumbling jinn world to return to their own. This installment is full of action and wonderful fantasy lore. All of the different characters have vivid descriptions, and the settings and magic are vast.
