Another bright and breathtaking adventure, and a reminder of just why I adore Brandon Sanderson’s work.  Spensa is a wonderful character, and following her personal journey and the mystery surrounding her father’s death and the circumstances of this futuristic space realm are absolutely fascinating and kept me hooked.  I didn’t want to put it down - very excited to start the sequel!  As always, Sanderson doesn’t disappoint - an adventure through and through.

The plot, the characters, the banter, the dilapidated planet, the mystery, the angst. This book kept me laughing and on the edge of my seat wanting to know what you happen next. I struggled to put it down once I started, an amazing read.

Also M-bot is the fucking best. The gives me the same energy as Moanas grandmother and Rafiki from the Lion King. For an AI alien spaceship he is fucking hilarious. He doesn't make any sense like 90% of the time, in the best ways possible. He's like an angsty teen and a crotchety old man all at the same time.

I think the two biggest growths we see in this book comes from Spensa and Jorgen. We get to see Spensa figure out everything that happened to her father and why her family has been treated the way that they have for the past 10 years but we also see her grow into herself and become better, not only for herself but also for her crew. One the other hand we see Jorgen go from a stuck up elite deserving of the name Jerkface so a repectible flightleader who puts his crew above himself and makes sure to his best ability that he won't lose another crew member and making sure that every one of his crew is the best that they can be even if it means that he has to do his own training after classes are out for the day during his free time. You can also see the change in him as at first when the crew first started using Jrrkface as his callsign he fought it and was being a prideful elitist asshole about it and going to Cobb to try and get them to stop but towards the end he is starting to accept it and you don't really see him making a fuss about it anymore.

While the deaths of their crewmates are sad, and the ones that chose to leave are also a sad in their own way. I don't think that the ones that are still there would be where they are without them. As sad as it might sound I think it made them all better in the end.

Also doomslug is 100% the best character. I cannot wait to dive into the next book in this series.

This was overall a fun and fast paced read. I don't have a ton to say in terms of why I'm rating it at a 3 star because I think a large part of that is just that I didn't really love these characters a ton and didn't feel super connected to them. However, I think that is also largely due to the fact that this book is geared toward a younger audience and I am not that audience. I do think Brandon Sanderson does a great job with world building and character building and this was definitely a book that could be flown through because the pacing was super good. I would definitely recommend this, but only to the YA audience it's written for.

This book was a little slow to start and then picked up pace rapidly toward the end. There is definitely a lot of action but I still found it easy enough to follow and visualize what was going on. It was definitely a departure from the more light and cozy books I have been reading recently but I enjoyed the ride.
I appreciated the character development and world that Brandon has created and I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series to see where he takes it.

Skyward was everything I didn’t know I wanted! So good, so fun!

These characters are all so well developed! They all feel individual, they all have compelling arcs and relationships, and they all grow so much! I adore them, and can’t wait to read about them in Skyward Flight.

Spensa is such a strong character, and she has such great development throughout the book. The themes of fear and bravery were so well explored through her character, especially with how she responds to the people around her. Also, the little bit of romantic hinting was super cute and I’m curious to see if/how it progresses.

The plot was great, the characters might be my favorite Sanderson ensemble, and I’m so excited to see where it goes. 5 well deserved stars.
