3.75? 3.8?

It was certainly an enjoyable book. I loved Spensa and the other cast of characters, and the premise of an underground civilization fighting aliens above is a really great one (Gurren Lagan anyone?)

BUT my main issues came with the rest of the plot. I felt like I have read this kind of story before and *forgive me* but it didn't feel super unique in terms of sci-fi. It was still well executed and written though. I felt that certain things in the end felt too easy, like a deus ex machina. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of how quickly the ending actions happened. Because of the slower pace of the rest of book, it felt very rushed.

Anyways, I plan on reading other Sanderson books soon (I've started on Way of Kings, which sounds like it's much more up my alley!)

I think this may be my favourite if Sanderson’s books so far. Gripping plot, unexpected twists and flawed characters. I’d give it six stars if I could.

I have avoided Brandon Sanderson books for fear of them being incredibly dense and boring due to their notorious length, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that this book flies by super fast and is very entertaining. I absolutely loved all of the characters as well as the interesting and unique premise of this book. The story at times had me smiling, chuckling, and almost crying throughout it. It was well paced and never felt like I was struggling to get through it. I especially liked how many scenes and dialogue lines nearing the end mirrored or hinted back at previous scenes, giving them even more meaning. I will definitely be highly anticipating the sequel!

Beforehand I wasn't sure if this would be my thing, but I really enjoyed reading this book. Interesting story and characters and very hard to put down. Might have to go to the library for part 2 soon :)

Honestly. Reading this book felt like reading Ender's Game all over again...and that's a huge compliment. My first Brandon Sanderson book, and certainly not my last.
