The way this was written without full stops took a while to get used to, but in the end I liked it. It made the prose feel poetic, and each character still felt unique. It felt like listening to a group of people telling you a story.

There were some perspectives I liked, but some of them felt really mean-spirited (both Yazz and Morgan’s segments read like they were the targets of mockery by the author, which was disappointing) and it's weird that three different people managed to magically rise out of depression on a dime for no reason. The ending felt really predictable and the character it involved annoyed me.

I picked this up and when I got started I was like ‚bleh complicated stories about being human, just gimme sci-fi‘

However, by about a chapter through i couldn’t really stop. The characters are so vividly depicted it’s one of those books that - despite having a huge cast of protagonists - everyone feels very memorable and I was never wracking my brain trying to remember who was who. I liked that because when the circles of each character budge up against one another it gives you a little thrill to be seeing the character you just read, from the perspective of another. I also like how well the author portrays characters from the perspective of others; it brings so many of their flaws to light that you feel like you’re getting to know them all over again with fresh eyes. It was a great read and very expansive in its cast and the breadth of time covered. Can’t wait to pick up another book by Bernadine Evaristo.

Listened to the audiobook, which was really enjoyable. I was doing chores while listening so sometimes I might have gotten a bit distracted and had to rewind to understand which character the chapters were about but otherwise loved the book!

I love a multi-POV and multi generational fiction novel that discusses social and historical issues while making you see the complete complexity and humanity of the characters.

A great work!

This book covers such a large scope it is hard to say anything definitive about it. It is masterfully constructed, and story to story, chapter to chapter, you can feel the web of characters growing in your mind. Nothing is unconsidered. This is a novel of beautiful character studies and fascinating small stories that I would recommend to anyone
