Didn't enjoy at first but got increasingly engaged after the third chapter. As the book continues, the characters' lives become more interwoven and it gets more engaging. By the end I found it to be a compelling read, incredible how the characters' lives are woven together and a powerful way to illustrate the experiences of different women in the UK.

Ich war oft überfordert, mit allen Menschen und Geschichten mitzuhalten. Trotzdem oder deswegen ein sehr beeindruckendes Werk! Auf keinen Fall leichte Kost, aber sehr wertvoll und bereichernd.

This book was challenging in ways I certainly anticipated, but also in ways I did not. I struggled with this book for a long month; I can’t imagine if I had read a physical version rather than listen to it. I think for some, this book could be really illuminating, and I can appreciate why it is/was so celebrated. That said, I just really struggled with how ultimately negatively everything was portrayed. Yes, this brutal honesty in the book was part of the point, but literally none of the relationships, topics, etc. seemed to have an example of SOMETHING healthy to hopeful. Again, not what the intended feeling of the book, and as a white woman, I feel like I need to unpack that tension, but I think it’s something worth mentioning. I guess my tension lies in that it felt that the author was going for expressing the variety of the Black woman’s (and gender fluid individual’s) lived experience in Britain, but in reality, it was almost a monolith of almost entirely pain.

Found the chapter structures a little weird at times. Not sure if this was due to it being an audiobook but it felt like it cut off at awkward points/chapters abruptly ended. Felt most of the stories wrapped up pretty well but there were a couple of stragglers, namely LaTisha and winsome who were kinda missed in the ending. Overall an engaging read and some really interesting stories. The only really weak one for me was Yazz's story but the rest were fab.

This book was incredible. I love the authors writing style, read almost like poetry at points. I was hooked and loved how each story had some link to another, intertwining these women in small ways.

This story is so smart. Incredible.

I cried a few times throughout and would recommend reading trigger warnings however. It's pretty intense in parts.
