This is a powerful account of a horrifying set of events, but it's not, for me, a very good memoir, or essay, or whatever it might be called. It's very intimate but very distant, and it feels like I need more context from Li's other work or her life to really engage with it successfully.

This is a difficult book to rate, as it contains the thoughts of a woman who has lost two sons to suicide. Overall, I found her cyclical thoughts and her experience with mental health relatable, and her pain over the loss of her sons heartbreaking.

How do you put into words things that can’t be put into words? If anyone comes close, it’s Yiyun Li. Can’t recommend more.
