I actually really enjoyed this book. In the beginning I thought I was going to end up hating it. But I think it got better and better. I'm actually very excited for the second book, and it was very worth the read.

The reason i didn’t give this 5 stars is because it took me a while to come back to the book, as i had started reading it ages ago but only literally picked it back up today. Not sure if the problem was me or if i just didn’t feel captivated enough in the beginning but i really enjoyed the book thoroughly. I really enjoyed the relationship between Ridden & Alosa, i found their back and forth very amusing and easy to follow. I really like Alosa as a character too, she is strong and stubborn but also has a human nature unlike her father. The book ended in a way that has left me wanting to read the second one which i shall do.

to be completely honest, this book wasn't the enemies-to-lovers i was hoping it to be, it was a mediocre story with a few tropes thrown in. i think this is just personal preference, but i am disappointed, especially after i had actually enjoyed the author's standalone, the shadows between us. it was just mediocre.

4/5⭐

Overall a fine read on audio. The premise is fun but execution was meh. Good enough to listen through but I wouldn’t actively recommend this book because the characters are literally so dumb. Not just the main character but also the love interest (I’ve already forgotten their names). They just make stupid decisions and it makes no sense that nobody questions those decisions. And one thing that really irked me is how main girl was constantly asking questions to play dumb like “oh what do you mean?” My god girl, just shut up!! He’s obviously still getting info out of you!! Don’t talk to cops, and don’t talk to the boy who’s keeping you in his ship’s brig.

Also the fact that the main character
was a siren
was obvious almost from the start. It wasn’t really a twist since it was revealed like halfway through, but still it was obvious even when it hadn’t been revealed. And I really wish she’d just fucking
killed the captain, just because he’s the love interest’s brother doesn’t mean he didn’t basically try to r*pe her…

what i liked:
- the pacing
- the mc
- the story overall was really fun to read

adventurous lighthearted medium-paced

The book was short, so it was easy enough to read through. But it wasn’t well crafted. The plotline didn’t make sense and the people acted out of character often. You also don’t get the cool swaggering pirates you’d expect but shallow shells that could basically be applied to any people on a ship.
Since I only expected a short easy romancy story as palate cleanser that was fine. Didn’t read it for the plot. But I won’t read it a second time either…
The dustcover of this version though is porn. Can stop touching it, sooo satisfying. Maybe I’ll keep this book just to run my fingers over the spine from time to time.

I really enjoyed this! I loved all the elements of this story and thought it was amazing for a YA novel- can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
