Emotional novel but well worth the read as you navigate the complicated familial relationships portrayed and flawed but sympathetic characters, particularly Ruth. If you’re in the mental health field, I’d say steer clear as it will probably feel too much like work.

Our protagonist is clinical psychologist just like the author.
I can only believe that Ms Thomas has relied on her education and life experiences while writing this novel. It was known from the very start that the ending would be troublesome.

As a former clinical psychologist Bev has an incredible insight into how therapists work the processes they adopt to aid their clients. This gives A Good Enough Mother so much depth in the detail which is quite frankly fascinating. The story line wasn't quite gripping enough for me but it keeps you turning the pages.
For some reason I really wasn’t sure this book was going to be for me, but the more I read, the more I was sucked in. When I did put the book down, I couldn’t stop thinking about the story, theorizing where it was going.
At first you learn Ruth is really good at her job, very professional… but then there are small insights that tell you everything is going to implode… but when and how are the questions you want to answer. It was like a train wreck I couldn’t look away from.

Very thought provoking story. Written very knowledgeable about the counselling process.
I won’t say this is a bad book per se, but it’s not my cup of tea. The pacing felt off - too wordy, too full of explanations, initially, followed by a strange, detached narrative later on, with the narrator not being central to events.
Fundamentally, though, my main issue with this is the same as I have for any psychological thriller - the main character always makes several stupid, completely out-of-character decisions that make no sense other than to force the plot.
