Great look at how gender roles and desire used to be seen - surprisingly more progressive than today

Socrates needs to get his ass back in the bath house, goddamn it, and hopefully stay in there.

Audiobook commentary:
The narrator quite literally puts me to sleep with his weird ass intonations, prononciation and speech altogether. Is he reading a text where there is a dot after every second word? I'm in pain. Who pronounces 'them' as 'thèéèémmmmm'.

Thought this was quite interesting to read and I really appreciated the in-depth analysis in the introduction.

Plato once again demonstrates his standing as one of philosophy’s most skilled and entertaining writers, though certain passages in this work no longer resonate with contemporary audiences due to their dated context.

Enough to ponder for a lifetime. Eryximachus has my vote! (Despite Plato’s best efforts to disparage him as ever the exacting dramatist.)

My soul’s captured the image of Socrates alone, sounds of the raucous banquet dim in the evening outdoors as he stands with his eyes upturned to the sky in wonder. One transfixed, one ancient and eternal; Alcibiades shouts and rages in righteous anger, “None of you understand him, and you know it!” A soul of silver water where the clouds slowly shift....he is beyond time and touches grace. There’s an inexpressible melancholy to Socrates, his divine mind flung to form in space & time, in burning Athens, no less.

Philosophy is alive and active. Untenable tension then between Plato’s very fictionalizing of the philosophic process: he is the greatest “daimon,” maybe. Hopefully in adding our own voices to the dialogue, we do not end up drunk and asleep :)

Fascinating but fundamentally unsatisfying review of the nature of love.
