"if, as we agreed, the aim of love is the perpetual possession of the good, it necessarily follows that it must desire immortality together with the good, and the argument leads us to the inevitable conclusion that love is love of immortality as well as of the good."

Sorry Socrates, I preferred Agathon’s speech to yours! Although I did chuckle when he said “no human child has ever yet earned his father a cult”. Little did he know…

I can’t possibly comment on the quality of the translation, but it read well to my amateur eyes. Although the use of the word ‘boyfriend’ made me giggle every time. ‘Socrates’ boyfriend’. What a phrase lol.

Anyway, all that aside, I’m glad I read this, especially for Aristophanes and Agathon’s speeches. My favourite quote about love: “He is gracious and gentle; adored by the wise, admired by the gods; craved when absent, prized when present […] For the whole of heaven and the whole of earth, he is matchless and peerless as governor and guide.”

Pretty good and makes some interesting points. Not sure I fully agree with Plato but I do appreciate the examination of love. I think near the end the Socratic glazing gets a bit too much but maybe im just too stupid to understand what is happening.
