I usually don't go for first person narrative but I loved this.

OK, take the siege of Constantinople, add an engineer who doubles as Sherlock Holmes in that he can figure out ANYthing in about two minutes with a little ratiocination (hmm, covered wagons, let's see, hm, no, wait, yes, I see, they must be X and he's going to do Y with them!")

Luckily he's sometimes wrong, and sometimes not telling the truth.

Stir in his friend as the enemy commander, trying to take the city without killing Orhan, and not averse to the occasional lie himself.

If you like snarky smart people solving a series of problems, you'll probably like this.

The ending is a tad disappointing.

A very enjoyable, rather nerdy romp of a tale about a character who should know better going doing all the right things for the wrong reasons and at the same time not doing the right thing. The moral dilemma he finds himself in is overcome by his "engineeriness" in wanting to apply solutions to every problems instead of trying to understand them and empathizing. If you like Joe Abercrombie this book has the same kind of rather crass sense of humour. I loved it.

It has taken me 7 months to complete this book, a book I was eager to read.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and read the last third in only a few days.

The reason for my tardiness was that it is not the sort of book to read in a couple of sittings. It is quite complex and full of technical detail about siege-making and weaponry.
The style of writing makes it slow to read.

All the above sounds negative, it is not. I have given it a 5 star rating and would thoroughly recommend it.

It is clever, witty, educational and humorous.

This was a random library grab and I’m so glad for it. It reads like a  monologue (intentionally) and I enjoyed the pithy take and dry humor. It’s one of the most realistically human reads I’ve ever enjoyed and while not non-fiction, is probably the most true perspective you’ll ever read about what its like to be a human. I took a star  for the ending which is more a hit on me as it was perfectly in-line with the story.

I have to write a review for this even though it's been a few months since I finished it. In the beginning I didn't like it; it sounded boring, stilted, and there were so many weird details and flashbacks that I almost put it aside. But I'm so glad I didn't because it drew me in so surely there were definitely times when I was reluctant to put it down and found myself clumsily trying to do some daily task while keeping my eyes glued to the (digital) page. The level of detail and the side stories began to make sense, and the characters bloomed so clearly, I wouldn't have blinked if they walked into the same room as me. The writing is clever and will get to you. P.S. I'm in the camp that liked the ending!
