A pleasant surprise

I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Spensa is a great character and seeing her growth was really great. I loved her relationships--especially with Cobb and M-Bot. Definitely want to continue with the series!

pride is a virtue in those who make it one.

I LOVED THIS BOOOOOOK!!!

many thanks to my lovely father for recommending this book. he’s been dying for me to read one of his favourites, and brandon sanderson is probably his favourite author.

i loved these characters. spensa felt so real and i really related to her in some ways. my dad says she reminds him of me, which fills my heart. i love the camaraderie of skyward flight, and big love to cobb. they all had fleshed out personalities and each taught spensa something, in one way or another.

this book has a really good way of pulling you in and pulling you further. at no point was i bored. it took me a minute to get used to the world (which was amazingly put-together by the way) and then i was in. it all felt very real and i was guessing all the twists and turns, some right, and some wrong.

really great sci-fi book that has you rooting for the protagonist the whole way through.

SHOUTOUT TO M-BOT THAT’S MY FUCKING G

Remember how much we all loved [b:Ender's Game|375802|Ender's Game (Ender's Saga, #1)|Orson Scott Card|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1408303130l/375802._SY75_.jpg|2422333] when we were younger and, frankly, did not have nearly the diversity of grown-up books for kids that kids have nowadays? You know how poorly that book has aged and how alarming so much of the violence and exploitation seems now?

Well, here's your solution. It's [b:Ender's Game|375802|Ender's Game (Ender's Saga, #1)|Orson Scott Card|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1408303130l/375802._SY75_.jpg|2422333]. But updated--a premise that makes more sense, a world that's better drawn, more engaging three-dimensional characters, and about 110 percent more awesome.

You'll love it. It's not Earth-shatteringly original or anything. But it is solid and solidly enjoyable, and I loved it.

Such an immersive read. I found that the characters had depth - they weren't perfect but it was nice to see that there were no complete stereotypes of characters. I enjoyed the little banters and humor that the characters shared. Liked the world building and background stories that were hidden. The revelation at the end of the book surprised me.

Had me gasping, screaming and cheering on my bed as I read this!! Probably the first sci-fi book that I really liked and I can't wait to read more Brandon Sanderson!!!!

My original review appears on the Kindle Edition of this book - I thought I had deleted it when updating Goodreads on my phone to reflect my re-read on Audible. I am seriously not a super-user of Goodreads.

The first time through I read Skyward on Kindle. I rated it four stars because of the typical-to-YA features (told in first person, very little parental involvement, blatant disrespect for authority). Kudos to Sanderson for portraying the realities of war - the dropout rate in Skyward Flight was astonishing! I also really enjoyed the humor and camaraderie.

Something about reading it on audio the second time through pushed it to five stars for me. Suzy Jackson did an amazing job narrating this book. I saw Spensa's arc differently - I really saw her growth. And anyone who knows me knows that a "girl and her starship" story is totally my jam.

I can't wait for Starsight! Planning a third read of Skyward before its release. Wish I could attend the Starsight release party in Utah, since I had so much fun at the Skyward book tour stop last year. Alas, I can't travel west that close to Thanksgiving.
