Roll For Romance

Roll for Romance had a unique premise, blending contemporary romance with a fantasy subplot, which definitely caught my interest. I really enjoyed the real world storyline, Sadie’s journey of self discovery and building new relationships was heartfelt and engaging. However, the fantasy elements within the DnD game didn’t quite land for me; the world building felt rushed and the transitions were a bit abrupt. Overall, it was a creative concept with strong moments, but it didn’t fully come together in the way I hoped.

I received an eARC for review.

Cute and unique!

A creative story with a strong element of fun. I have zero background knowledge on D&D, but enjoyed the incorporation of gameplay into the story. I thought Sadie’s journey was realistic and well written.

Really sweet, swoony, and adventurous. I appreciated that the DND campaign was written as if it was its own story, using 3rd person to differentiate from the “real” people! Sadie and Noah were easy to love, but I especially loved the side characters. A lovely and easy binge read!

This was such a fun, sweet story! And we got two stories in one- with Sadie and Noah falling in love in the real world as their D&D characters flirt in game. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy the dual storylines, but I got unexpectedly attached to the D&D characters! I have a passing familiarity with D&D, and feel like this is a great intro/showcase for curious beginners, while not being overburdened with explanation for the more experienced. It was also really interesting to see when characters used their D&D characters to explore different aspects of themselves vs when they chose to lean in to other aspects. Such a love letter to nerds, and fan culture/art as well.

I also loved Sadie and Noah’s storyline! Sadie is dealing with burnout from her big city corporate job, and getting back in touch with her hobbies. I liked that she fully explored going back to the city for a new job, and recognized that it could still be a good choice for her, even if she decided that’s not what she wanted anymore. Noah was charming, supportive, and kind- truly a walking green flag. I loved how confident and steady he was, and how he helped Sadie ground herself when her anxiety flared. The slow burn tension between them was great, as was the payoff. The barriers to their relationship felt real, and they communicated their concerns.

The side characters were endearing and real, and I loved the side plot of making friends as an adult and all the nervous and excited feelings that brings.
Also love a small town romance that passes the vibe check; the community the characters created was inclusive, and loved their town without needing to do any city bashing!
