This was my first JG's historical romance novel & I'm in love!
I'm in love with her writing, the story, the characters, and the era. I am thing for the romanticized Medieval era. Julie Garwood does not disappoint. And Duncan *sigh* I am in love!

"You take my heart with you, my loving captor."
"Nay, Madelyne. I am your captive in body and soul."
It was awesome from start to finish. I absolutely loved Madelyne, she is definitely one of my favorite female characters. She was so spunky, innocent, honest and very caring. I also very much loved Duncan, he was such an alpha male but not one of those overbearing ones. The pace was on the slow side but it worked really well for this book. I loved how they grew towards each other throughout the book. The chemistry was very strong. What I also liked was honest both Duncan and Madelyne were. I hate it (especially in HR books) when there is too much pushing and pulling between the characters, or when the female characters plays hard to get until the end. This was not the case in this book.
Why did I give this book 4 stars if I loved it so much? I thought the ending was a but rushed, and I would've loved if there was at least an epilogue at the end. I think an extra chapter or three would've been perfect for this book.
3.75 stars. I'm sure I read this long ago, but I was able to get in on scribd and I needed a change. I liked it. Duncan was sweetly entranced by Madelyne and she was cute in her loud, contradictory ways. He wasn't quite as badass as I'd like outside of the battlefield. Seemed to do fine there, but he was too easily swayed to Madelyne's demands. He talked a good talk, but caved pretty quickly to what she wanted. I'm not saying he should have been a jackass, just that I would have liked a bit more tenacity on his side. And the villain? Not so scary.
Though I've owned the paperback for about 20 years, this was a "re-read" in audio format. 4/5 stars for the story, 1/5 stars for the reader (Anne Flosnick)---her overly breathy voice and melodramatic inflections grated on my nerves.

When you need to study so you procrastinate by reading novels. Yea, this was one of those. Nothing like some cute, unadulterated romance to get you through your exams.
I was captivated by this book. I read it as though I was watching a movie through the words. Each sentence was an anticipation to the next one. Each chapter unfolded a heart warming story between a man and a woman. Both lead characters, Duncan and Madelyne held strong from beginning to end.
The story had a sense of humor along with romance and dramatic adventure. Duncan has a lot of love for his leading woman no matter how many times she has accidentally hit him in the chin. Even though Madelyns family has turned their back on her, she still held strong. Her brother I could have killed him myself. Julie Garwood, has written another good book for us readers to cuddle up with late into the night. And I mean late into the night.
I couldn’t put the book down. I read this until my eyes crossed, the words were blurring together and the sun came up. Lol. Read it if you dare.

This one was only OK for me. A bit too slow and the middle kind of dragged.
