Their chemistry was very mid. She's shy and then screaming like mad and all he does is sigh.

Second Read Review: April 15, 2022
On my second re-read, I found it just as lovely as the first time. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. It was so enjoyable to watch them fall in love with each other. I especially loved the scenes between Madelyne and the horse, and the banter and teasing were very heartwarming and fun.

Original Review
I enjoyed this book much more than the previous Garwood book I had read. I loved the characters—Duncan and Madelyne had good chemistry together. I enjoyed all their scenes together. The foot warming scene, the first tent scene, her delirious fever scenes… Duncan was actually a pretty intelligent hero as well—he could read her reactions and make proper deductions about what she was thinking/feeling. I like that; a common theme of romance novels is miscommunication and misunderstanding, it was refreshing to see a hero knowing the heroine better than she knew herself. I also enjoyed all the secondary characters—the Wexton family was a hoot! Antony and Father Berton were also fantastic second characters; I love how everyone warmed up to Madelyne. I’m glad Gerald and Adela could have their happy ending as well.
As much as I loved reading about Duncan and Madelyne’s romance, I think I like the scenes with them and most certainly her and Silenus the best. I adore horses and I loved the dynamic of this huge, fierce horse that is in actuality a giant softy in the inside—it is a wonderful similarity between horse and master. Plus Silenus sounds like a gorgeous animal. (Truly the only thing missing from this novel would be a kitten!)
Also a slight pet peeve, while I loved the fact Duncan knew she was pregnant before she did, I really hated the line about “you better give a son first…” Like it’s actually the “woman” who decides what gender the baby is! I know it’s a history thing where they didn’t know about that kind of thing until recently (last century or so I believe…) but it is still a pet peeve of mine. A trite one, but it is nevertheless there.
Rating: 4.75/5.0—Overall, a wonderful read. I enjoyed the romance and the action of the whole plot. Not quite a full rating because it seemed to drag a bit in the middle of the story—I was waiting for Louddon to actually make his move. He was a rather lazy villain.
