Eve Out of Her Ruins is a gritty story of four teens growing up in an impoverished part of the capital of Mauritius. It’s told in a series of mostly internal monologues from each of the teens. There’s plenty of violence, both sexual and physical and the sense of rage and despair and feeling trapped is strong. But there is also light and hope in the form of friendship, love and books. The prose was powerful, simple yet beautiful, and kept me absorbed throughout this slim volume. And the characters will remain in my head and heart for a long time to come.
