I really liked this, a lovely haunting story steeped in Welsh mythology.
Enjoyed this suspenseful and creative story.
Lots of depth for not much length (146 pp).

I thought these would be awesome like the Charlie Bone books. It wasn't. It's really sad in a way. I felt really bad for him. The ending was just out there. I read this in one sitting. I don't think I'll read the others.
3.5 stars, was okay and abit of fun, but extremely predictable . The characters and the world didn't keep me wanting to turn the page it was more just how easy it was to read so for that reason don't feel like I can give it any higher of a rating.
Finished reading this last night...and it took a while (like more than 1/2 way through) to get going, but when it did it moved quickly. It occurs to me that it has some similarities to the Harry Potter series (ok, just a few similarities...Gwyn, the main character, has a friend, who has several siblings including twin brothers....) Anyway, a good read, much better for the younger set than the adults out there tho...
For some reason, I just didn't enjoy this one as much as I hoped I would. I didn't like the way everyone treated Gwyn and I found it a little confusing sometimes.

I first read this book in school probably about 2006 and it was the first time I saw Wales and Welsh things in a story book. I think the welshness is what immediately caught me but the magic is what kept me. This is a genuinely beautiful story that teaches kids about loss and moving on and it's all under the vale of magic.
I use to read this and the sequels at least once a year but at some point in high school maybe 2012/13 I stopped. I think I should start doing it again, to keep it alive in my mind.
Also can more stories use old Welsh as the magic language because it's cool as and I love it. Both in this and Howl's Moving Castle, and any more that I do not know about.

I did enjoy it, but I feel more could have been done with this. It has a strong start, but towards the end, things sort of… I don't know, they're not as strong? His grandmother seems like she positioned herself closely to the world of magic, and then, having never inherited it, uses her grandson to live a life she wanted for herself. It also seems she knew what happened to his sister, yet never said anything (not that anyone would have believed her). I'm also not so sure how his father comes to be amiable at the end? Unless I missed something.
Overall, it was interesting to see Welsh language and life, the magic seemed believable, but more could have been developed to bring more understanding into the world. I'm not sure I understand the history or dynamics of what's going on.
