This is one of those books that makes me wish for a book club or an english class. Vonnegut writes a compelling story even in the near-total absence of narrative framing. Every vignette communicates his feelings about the war, or about the impact it has on people. I both lack historical knowledge and reading comprehension to be more granular, but this was an excellent read.

Do you ever read a book and convince yourself you’re just not smart enough to understand what just happened? This was that for me. I kept hoping it would come together for me and I would make sense of the forward and backward, in and out of time and lucidity, but I never did. I know it’s a classic, but it wasn’t for me.

The whole time traveling and space alien theme was a bit odd right till the end, when I actually think I got it. Space sci-fi still doesn't appeal to me very much, though.

Otherwise, the book was good. It was, at least, a different war novel from all the others I've read and heard of before. It was easy to read, as well, especially after I found this Slaughterhouse 5 glossary online:

Vonnegut’s pithy prose always delights. Every writer should study him, if only to glean the possibilities of minimalist prose. He conveys so much in so little space.
As a novel, this one is more of a vibe than a linear story. It bounces between timelines and experiences to draw a full portrait of Billy Pilgrim, who was shaken and broken from war. But it also navigates the absurdities and contradictions of life, which leave the novel feeling more existentialist and less tragic. It may not be a page-turner, but it’s a timeless and endearing read nonetheless.
