Ooof, this is a gut punch of a book. It was very well paced and written. Paul Holes narrated himself, my only critique is the overemphasis of the “t” sound in literally any word (sorry Paul just personal/regional preference). I had to take this in chunks, serial killers and cold cases are devastating and I can’t imagine actually being responsible for finding the truth and bearing witness to the horror.
All the stars.
Seriously.
Many of us true-crime aficionados are well acquainted with the case o the Golden State Killer that remained unsolved for so long. Captivating the most seasoned sleuths and the most seasoned detectives. No one, and I mean no one, was more into this case than our very own, Paul Holes. The life and career of the detective with the sharpest mind ever. His trajectory is a remarkable one. The journey of a lifetime and I feel honored that he decided to share all of this with us readers.
This is the real deal guys, the real monster hunt. The one we cannot even begin to imagine. We have the opportunity to see a small fraction of the depravity in this world, the one that only the ones in law enforcement get to see.
The dedication to giving the victims and their families some well-deserved justice is palpable in Hole’s story. It certainly is so well written that you might even feel like you are reading a crime fiction book. Well, this is not the case. You have to stop and remind yourself that what you’re reading is 100% real.
This book has everyone hooked for a reason. I suggest that you get yourself a copy and just sit back and enjoy. I was glued to the pages when I was well aware that I should’ve been getting enough rest for my 12hr shift. I even hear he is breaking some hearts now!
I would like to thank Celadon Books and Mr. Paul Holes for the opportunity to read this amazing book before the pub date. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The parts I liked I really liked, but the parts I didn’t I really didn’t. I will admit that some of this may come from the fact that I was listening, rather than reading, the book and that can overemphasize both feelings of enjoyment and, well, not.

Very interesting to hear about all the cases he worked on and how this line of work affected his life. Very good book.

Not bad but very dark. Unwise to listen to at night while walking alone in a big city. At least in my opinion. Although I still did so. Unless you’re listening to the excessively frequent bits about his marriage. I guess I should’ve just listened to a podcast if I wanted purely true crime. I didn’t like how the narrative structure had the vast majority of the book fairly to do the start and end.
Graphic: Death, Physical abuse, Rape, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Torture, Violence
Moderate: Kidnapping, Stalking
This was interesting but I am not a true crime girlie and will stay in my lane next time.
If you’d like a book that makes you double check if your doors are locked at night and the security system is alarmed, then this one’s for you. At times quite gruesome and disturbing. Other times interesting to hear how crime scenes were carefully scrutinized or how DNA analysis made it possible to solve cold cases decades later.
