Oh my goodness, I don't know what took me so long to read this book because it was marvelous. Will definitely be reading more of Winterson's books in the near future.
"The earth is round and flat at the same time. This is obvious. That it is round appears indisputable; that it is flat is our common experience, also indisputable. The gobe does not supersede the map; the map does not distort the globe. (...) Round and flat, only a very little has been discovered."
I have a really hard time rating this book. There are some amazing parts in this book. Jeanette Winterson's writing is extremely beautiful and it has a lot of layers to it. The second chapter was by far my favorite. The way she manages to tell the stories of the princesses in such a short amount of space and make each of them unique and emotionally complex and the way she manages to give each character a voice is just brilliant. And there are other passages in which the writing is absolutely stunning. But that only makes about 40-50% of the book. The rest was okay, but it didn't reach the expectations the beginning set up for me stylisticaly.
I do think there are some interesting discussions to be held about this book. There is a lot of symbolism and it tackles some important issues as well. I actually think the book is buit in depth rather than in shape (if that makes any sense); it feels like Jeanette Winterson uses the story only as a pretext to dive into some more philosophical areas while still keeping a whimsical atmosphere and building some pretty interesting dynamics between characters. That being said, I think Sexing the Cherry is more of an experiment on writing than a story. I really enjoyed this book and I would probably recommend it to people who are into books who have more of an experimental structure.

I love violent women. Whimsy and salt make up something unbounded by time or place in this novel.
