strange but interesting and confusingly meaningful
Are we all living like this? Two lives, the ideal outer life and the inner imaginative life where we keep our secrets?Μια διάχυτη επιθυμία ρήξης με τις παραδοσιακές και λογικές αντιλήψεις, ένα έργο μεταμοντέρνων ιδεών περί των παραδοσιακών διαιρέσεων του χρόνου σε παρελθόν, παρόν και μέλλον, για τον κενό χώρο, για την παραδοσιακή αγάπη που εντοπίζεται στην οικογενειακή ζωή και που, σύμφωνα με τη Winterson, είναι κατά κύριο λόγο μια μυθοπλασία.
The Buddhists say there are 149 ways to God. I'm not looking for God, only for myself, and that is far more complicated.

I love Jeanette Wintersons writing: it is not always fast and easy to read but it is eloquent, poetic. The worlds she conjures are a mix of fairytales, history and perspectives on reality that stimulate the imagination and philosopihical thoughts.
"I don't know if other worlds exist in space or time. Perhaps this is the only one and the rest is rich imaginings. Either way it doesn't matter. We have to protect both possibilities. They seem to be interdependent"
4.5 stars
If you're here for plot, you're in the wrong place. Winterson's prose is absolutely luxurious.

Absolutely brilliant! I believe I have highlighted the entire book, beautifully written. Lots of meaningful words and thoughts on life and the journeys we take. I thought it would be a hard read, but she writes so beautifully she took me a lovely trip through time and space. I can't praise this book enough. I am glad I read it, I really am.
This was a second time read for me, I took a course in college on Magical Realism and this was one of the books I had to read. “Magical Realism is a genre where magic elements are a natural part in an otherwise mundane, realistic environment.” - Wikipedia. In this case this novel tells the story of the gigantic Dog Woman and her adopted son Jordan. The story is told amidst lots of flitting back and forth through time and space, with jumps from 1 story to another with little or no warning. For example, Jordan hears the story of the 12 Dancing Princesses from Grimms fairy tales, however he hears a sequel to this from 11 of the princesses themselves. They tell of what happened to them and their husbands after their wedding day and it is not exactly the happily ever after you might expect. Jordan then becomes obsessed with finding the missing princess Fortunata and hearing her story.
At time confusing, and always a little strange, I found this book to be quite enjoyable on the second reading, it's fun, a little disturbing at times, but a real page turner.

It's just.. I should really learn that magical realism is not my thing.
