The first few chapters of the book caught my interest immediately. The magic system hinted at something unique: seven saints that grant power discriminately to their descendants isn't new but the concept of the saints being called Strength, Grace, Patience, Death, Mercy, Chaos and Cunning is quite unique and that got me really excited. The opening mystery (death of the Death disciple) gave me Angels & Demons "death of the pope" similarities (I also just watched that movie when I read this book) and it had enough in it to get me curious.

As the story progressed, however, it became evident that the author was more concerned about developing Damian and Roz's relationship (unsuccessfully at that). At almost 45% into the book, nothing has truly happened outside of what we already know. The mystery has stalled, the rebellion activity nowhere to be seen, the magic nonexistent (nobody uses their magic here it seems lol).

The plot twist at the end was predictable but that would've been fine if the scene itself was written well enough. It hinged a lot on the reader's investment in Damian and Roz's love story and I frankly do not buy it. Aside from the repetitive memories of them frolicking in the city and stealing kisses in alleyways, nothing really suggest that what they felt for each other would be strong enough to develop into the all-encompassing love it became towards the end.

To end with something positive, I did like Roz as a main character. She was fiery, decisive, and was pretty much dragging Damian along to do what she believe is right. That in contrast with Damian's gentle and soft nature made for a unique relationship dynamic.

Since this is a duology, I will still be reading the sequel. I'm hoping that it would have more of the politics and magic system that was introduced (but not utilized) in this first book.

Really good book
Liked the twist at the end
Good lead into the second one
Took me so long cuz this was my first book reading after onyx storm lol

I really wanted to love this. The premise sounds like it's right up my alley and the basic plot itself was.
However, something about the writing style just didn't work for me at all. It felt very disconnected from the events and characters. Whilst I was really interested in the two main characters at first, I just never actually warmed up to them. Specifically, their romance didn't work for me at all. I didn't get the tension and didn't find myself rooting for them.
Furthermore, I personally found the plot to be a little shallow.  It was a great concept with some interesting magic mystery. However, it just didn't go deep enough for me to feel tense and exciting.

This book wasn’t horrible but the characters made me so mad especially the fmc because she was acting like she was the victim and the mmc LITERALLY tells her about the shit he was going through and one minute she was acting like she cares and then the next she’s lashing out on him for thing he couldnt even control and gaslighted him into doing things for her all because “he owed her for all the pain she caused him” like I get it she was hurt that her father died and wanted vengeance BUT THAT WASNT HIS FAULT and I hated how he just let her walk all over him it was so annoying to the point where their relationship was low key hard to watch and the plot was really confusing and disappointing
