I earned a kiss and a snort from my seven year old for reading this at bedtime. Ten out of ten would recommend.

For quite a long time I read this book aloud to our youngest daughter, Amelia, every night before bed. It was great fun!

A mother bird leaves to find food for her baby. While she is gone, the baby hatches and commences a search for his mother. The cumulative tale takes the bird through a variety of animals and machines. He finally finds a huge machine with a bucket. The machine bucket rises into the air and terrifies the bird. Finally, the machine deposits him in his nest and his mother returns. Children will identify with the story line and the baby birds relief and anxiety as he searches for his mother. The book could be used to encourage narrative skills.

I have the cloth version of this and there is a little plush bird on a string, love it and the story as a whole.

I read this as a palette cleanser after reading the Alison Bechdel graphic memoir of the same name, which was a struggle for me to get through and left me feeling weighed down. On the other hand, I vaguely remember reading this as a child, and it's cute and sweet for kiddos, so no complaints here.
