I finished it, but I’m not sure I liked it. The historical characters and storyline seemed much more rich and vivid than the present day counterparts.

A fantastic intricate story that weaves the lives of two women together through a span of 350 years using a rich cultural history as the thread.

I love this story. I love how it tells multiple tales of people who touch each other, sometimes only incidentally, and how those touches have far-reaching consequences. In some stories with multiple points of view, I get annoyed when the author switches because I get so entwined in the one being left, but in this one the transitions were seamless, barely noticeable.

Though it's not suspense, the entire middle third of the book feels suspenseful. Rather than a murky middle, The Weight of Ink was best in the middle.

If you like historical fiction, multiple points of view, character-driven stories, English history, Jewish history, or possibly mystery (that might be a stretch as it is not a true mystery) you might like this one. I highly recommend it.

This book taught me a lot about Sephardic communities in Amsterdam and succeeded at making academia a thrilling topic. That said, considering how nuanced much of it was, it is especially disappointing and superfluous how uncritically Kaddish approaches the state of Israel and the lessons Jewish and non-Jewish characters alike take from it.

Too much sorrow—wrong time, will pick up later.
