slow-moving at first.. up until page 150 was a chore, could have cut it down to about 50 pages

What a beautifully written book. Although I don't agree with the main character's philosophy (atheism), there is so much to appreciate about this book.

A precious trove of 17th century letters are found in a house in London that is being renovated in 2000. A soon to be retired , struggling with a debilitating disease, history professor, Helen Watt has been called in to evaluate the find and place it in the proper hands. Aaron Levy, a graduate student wrestling with a dissertation on Shakespeare is asked to help Watt in reading the documents and finding out who the author was.

I have read that one thinks of the book [b:People of the Book|1379961|People of the Book|Geraldine Brooks|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1442955497s/1379961.jpg|3020568] by [a:Geraldine Brooks|211268|Geraldine Brooks|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1303284528p2/211268.jpg], and I would agree with that, because that was my first thought at the end of the first chapter.

Although the majority of this book took place in London, a little takes place in Israel, particularly Masada which I was so glad I was able to visit.

Utterly outstanding. Neither of the timelines bored me, I was always excited to see what was happening with the other characters (which is so hard to do!!)

This book is HEAVY and it took me a while to get into. But it is very good. Nuanced and multithreaded and really about the nature of life and God.
