Good story, I found it a bit slow, then it got better. Then I thought, how do they have the letters that she wrote to other people and her replies? Maybe someone got all the letters at one point? Am I silly to wonder?

The author did an incredible amount of research... just so she could write a Not Like Other Girls story implying that every 17th-century woman other than our heroine was complicit in / responsible for her own oppression. What a waste.
DO NOT OVERLOOK THIS NOVEL. Few books have moved me the way this novel has. Few books have made me question my outlook on life and my belief systems like this one has. Shaken to my very core. I am a new person. Put this one on your to-read list immediately. 10/10
"How bitterly she'd been brought to understand-- through fire and fever, through deaths and her own failure to die-- that life fought for its own continuance. But she realized now that she'd never thought to ask why. This, she saw, was the reason. Water forcing her palm open, the current kissing her fingers. This. This shock of pleasure."

Slow to start but i literally couldnt put it down once I reached the second half. Loved it.
I've spent way too much time crafting this review in my head before trying to write something. This feels almost as much of a slog as trying to make my way through the book. I'm not sure if the author purposely wrote it to be difficult to work through, dropping names that would only be familiar to some academics, crafting strange grammatical constructions, and throwing out tidbits that would probably be exciting for historians but not for the average reader.
I thought Ester's story was interesting and definitely worthwhile, but the same goes for Rivka. I wish this book was written all in the past and from Rivka's point of view, as I was not really enthralled with the "growth" of Aaron Levy's character. Also, spoiler here, why after they got rescued did Ester get to pursue the exact life she wanted but Rivka had to remain a servant?
I haven't read other reviews yet, but by the star ratings I'm guessing I didn't love the book as much as other people. That's not to say I didn't get anything out of it.
