¿Quién no ama a Poe?

Dr. Dawn B. Sova made a mistake in her introduction of the book, and it may seem unnoticeable by others, but I will never stop defending Mary Shelley as the pioneer of the science fiction genre!

Edgar Allan Poe is also believed to have published the first science fiction story, in “Hans Phaall” (1835).

This is simply incorrect. It was Mary Shelley who wrote the first science fiction story: Frankenstein (1818).

Poe is by far my favorite poet and short story writer. His works have caught my attention since I was a child. I would highly recommend this Book to anyone who isn't sure if they like poetry or short stories. This will definitely change how you view them.

I know that Edgar Allan Poe is regarded as the 'architect' of the short story and highly regarded, but I really struggled with this tome.

Reading prose that was written about 200 years ago is fascinating as the language is so different and at times quite enchanting but it can also feel like wading through treacle. There is so much language, so many words used to describe a scene that I simply felt I was being overwhelmed.

I did enjoy MS Found in a Bottle, The Gold-Bug, The Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Mystery of Marie Roget and the insight into life and behaviours and opinions of the time shone thr0ugh strongly.

I know there are many Poe advocates out there and many who will enjoy reading this work but sadly I am not among them. I like my prose concise and straight to the point.

Classic. Hard to argue with Poe.

Hit or miss obviously, since these are old and also collected works. I really enjoy reading poe tho, the stories and poems I liked, I REALLY liked. The ones I disliked or found boring I just skipped.
Also, yes, it took me over 2 years to finally finish this beast.

4,5⭐️! reading the horror tales from Edgar Allan Poe while listening to its audiobook definitely an awesome idea to live the horror vibes! but also a terrible one, as the disturbing sounds you heard from the audiobook will haunting you in your sleep

Getting it out of the way, I shouldn't have picked the complete works. I really loved a few stories but most didn't go further than mildly interesting for me. I really like his gothic horror stories and also a few stories like his Dupin ones, but others weren't that appealing to me. But as the say, hindsight is 20/20.

With that said, he has some really good stories (like the Black Cat, the Tell Tale heart, the Cask of Amontillado, the case of Valdemar, etc.) and I should have picked one of the usual curated selections of his works. In fact I'd recommend anyone looking to read Poe to do that, and if they like it and want more, they can always get the full thing.

His poems are great and while I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to poetry, The Raven is my favourite poem to date.
