One of the best memoirs I have ever read. Highly recommend. The descriptions of food throughout are thoughtful and provide connection and deeper meaning to the story as a whole. Michelle is a beautiful writer and as I read, her feelings just flowed off the page and straight into me. Just spectacular.

My partner was listening to this and I ended up listening with him. I don't usually listen to audiobooks, but it felt more emotional, especially because my partner lost his dad last year.
Some parts were difficult to hear, like the conflicts between Michelle and her parents. But it was also relatable as both my partner and I have immigrant parents (though obviously there's some differences between Korean culture and Mexican). The parts describing the mother's illness were also difficult.
Overall it was vivid, great descriptions, and cathartic. Also I wouldn't recommend listening/reading when you're hungry or before bed because I kept getting hungry.

I find it hard to review this book because it’s so deeply raw and personal, and reminiscent of the many cathartic writing exercises I’ve done myself.

I will say this, many aspects of the book resonated with my own experience, such as growing up in between two (or in my case, three) cultures, food being an integral part your culture and identity, and the fear that you will lose all ties and claim to your parent’s culture when they pass.

Also, don’t read/listen to this when you’re hungry.
