I finished it in a day. It was absolutely heart wrenching; I cried multiple times. It definitely lives up to the hype—I was able to engage with it on such an emotional level, despite the fact that I am not Korean, don’t know any Korean foods, and haven’t been through any of these same experiences. Michelle is such a talented writer that she is able to carry the reader through every experience she has with ease.

She also skillfully wove a story of her and her mother’s lives. There were many many time jumps explaining past events, and never once was I confused about when we were.

Didn’t enjoy this as much as I expected to. Loved the food imagery and the insights to Korean culture, but didn’t connect so much with the people and hence didn’t have the emotional reaction to the book that people said I would have.

A deeply complex, deeply felt memoir about love and food and mothers and culture. Packed with striking lines and moments that bring tears to your eyes. A truly excellent book.

“For the rest of my life there would be a splinter in my being, stinging from the moment my mother died until it was buried with me.”

“It felt like the world had divided into two different types of people, those who had felt pain and those who had yet to.”

“Hers was tougher than tough love. It was brutal, industrial-strength. A sinewy love that never gave way to an inch of weakness. It was a love that saw what was best for you ten steps ahead, and didn't care if it hurt like hell in the meantime."

Review:
This book, has got to be one of the best memoirs I've read. It has got so many beautiful, raw, powerful, emotional, heartfelt and devastating moments all wrapped up into a single package. In this exquisite story of grief, family, food, love and endurance, Michelle Zauner tells her story about growing up as a Korean-American, portraying a strained, but beautiful relationship between herself and her mother, expressed through the delicate art of food.
The Japanese Rockstar talks about the nuances of growing up mixed-race, and her time in Seoul, focusing on the details of Korean food, and how that has helped her in ways not comprehendible.
This is something I would recommend to someone who enjoys reading memoirs and basking in cultures and emotions they might be unfamiliar with.
You will cry when she cries, eat when she eats, cook when she cooks, laugh when she laughs. Need I say more!?
