To me, one of the strongest things about the novel is the grace with which Dreiser plots the rise and fall of his characters. He does nothing abruptly. Everything that happens is believable and he has led the character and the reader to that point with a series of small actions, just the way life really plays out. There are few great turning points, at least not in the traditional sense. Rather, the small, daily choices the characters make define their outcomes. I can think of few better lessons to impart.

At first I didn't quite got invested or liked the story but after I gave it some more effort I enjoyed it. Not a favorite but an interesting classic

This was a tragedy. Absolutely and completely. It begins with a young woman (Carrie) moving to the big city (Chicago) to find work. Instead what she finds is a difficult life. Getting work is very difficult, and when she gets it, it's hardly enough to cover rent--let alone clothes for the winter. She gets sick, she thinks she will have to do the unthinkable: go back to her parents and the small town she grew up in.
Then a rich man comes to her rescue, literally. He gets her clothes to wear, a place to live, entertainment, clothes; whatever she could desire. As usual with these things, the more she gets the more she wants, and when another man comes who she thinks can offer her more, she goes with him. (He is tragic in his own way--deserts his wife, family, job--and steals thousands of dollars in order to start his new life.)
This new life isn't as glamorous as it appeared it would be at first. And the new couple struggles. He is soon jobless...and she must start working to support them when he can't (won't) find another job.
...and this isn't all! Every character (almost) reaches a tragic and sad ending in this novel. But it's like a soap opera, or a train wreck, you just can't stop yourself from reading!

Great book about a woman trying to make it on her own in 'the big city'. Situations, characters, and life in general is portrayed as a realistic glimpse into Carrie's life.
