As a queer woman who was raised Catholic (and no longer practices), I loved this book! Agatha’s character was so loveable and I saw a lot of myself in her.

The writing was well done, but I don't feel the story line and characters lived up to it. I did enjoy Agatha as a character, but also wanted much more of her and from her. I can see both sides of readers who enjoyed it and those who didn't.

A clever book that ranges from quirky and funny to sad and reflective. The type of slow paced novel where not a whole lot happens and yet you keep reading.

Pretty strong for a debut novel although the characters were a bit flatter than I would have liked, and I would have enjoyed a deeper exploration of some of the themes.

Overall this book raises more questions than it answers and I think that's the point.

"It's my belief that many men sleep too soundly at night."

Agatha of Little Neon is centred around sisters of the Catholic Church. When her parish goes broke Agatha and her sisters are parted from their beloved Sister Roberta and the house and life they shared. They are reassigned to a halfway house for recovering addicts and Agatha finds herself having to teach geometry at the local Catholic girls’ school. These changes, exposure to more of the world, and separation from her sisters leads Agatha to slowly but surely question her identity, beliefs, and how she wants to life her life. This is a very slow, quiet read, one without a lot of drama, and the prose is plain and unadorned. Yet the characters held my interest and Agatha’s increasingly incisive thoughts and observations, her questioning of church practices and behaviour, plus her small acts of rebellion made this small understated read a worthwhile one for me.
