In my personal opinion, these are the best kinds of novels. This book is a work of fiction but not really. What I mean is, there’s thousands of migrants that experience journeys just like this book. My ex boyfriend for example was actually from Acapulco and was 8 years old when he crossed the border just like the young boy in this story. He never told me details about his journey because it was too hard to talk about. Who knows- his story could be the same as Luca’s.
This is an incredible work of literature which should be required reading for all students everywhere but particularly in the U S. The author really brings the stark depravity and gentle goodness of humanity to life that feels so real it wriggles it's way under your skin and really sinks inside to become a part of us. It is difficult to really comprehend the hardships and sorrows of regular people caught up in these times.

Excellent read! There is no way a parent can read this book and not feel immense empathy for the thousands/millions of migrants that are forced to leave their home only to come to an inhospitable country.

Can’t recall a book that’s held my breath so much. My reading speed must’ve doubled at times as I romped on through to see what was round the next corner. Love how the young son wasn’t just an extra to add a bit of context but at times the story was told through his eyes view.
What is touching is the kindnesses shown by all the everyday Mexicans that the migrants meet on their arduous journey. Church-run charities offer practical help and local residents break the rules to cut them a break. Whether it’s a simple helping help from a stranger to climb the ladder of a train or long term relationships that grow between travellers . All this contrast starkly with the inhumanities inflicted by the gangsters and cartels who are causing them to flee.
At times heartwarming (the camaraderie amongst the migrants is so touching) always tense, astoundingly brutal. I’d love to think this is fiction and these things don’t really happen like that in South America. What an eye-opener
