I received an ARC copy from a Goodreads giveaway several months ago and have only now gotten a chance to read it. My expectations were much lower than this book deserves. An in-depth exploration of this multi-faceted family and their experience over one winter. Enjoyable and unpredictable in its quirkiness from start to end, it's a nice light read for anyone looking for something just outside of the norm to peruse.

I couldn't get into this and I didn't love it. It IS about life and death and grief and romance, but for some reason, it didn't all come together for me. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I felt at an arm's length throughout and never found myself entirely invested.

One of those YA titles that could easily make the jump over to the adult shelf. Memorable characters, moments that are (often simultaneously) funny, dark and/or tender, a discerning soundtrack - it went down so smoothly that I may well read it again.

I was lucky enough to win an arc copy of this book. Guys, check out SimonTEEN’s Goodreads page, there’s many awesome books they giveaway. Plus, you never know if you get the chance to win, so try it!
I have shamefully been procrastinating on my review on Simmone Howell's outstanding new book. And not because I don’t want to, but because of school work. I know lame excuse, though let’s go with that. Anyways, I really enjoyed this book. I could not put this down, I read it in one sitting. It was a quick and cute.
I usually don’t like the family dynamics in YA; for one thing, being that there isn’t many good families storylines on YA, though I love it. I love the relationship the main character had with her dad. It wasn’t a close relationship as I thought it was going to be, but for some reason it work. The personalities that Howell’s gives her characters are interesting. All though the book, I felt that it was indie film.
For me, it is a recommendation. It’s different than the contemporary novels I have read, for which I think it’ll stand out more.

How are all Aussie YA books so good? Seriously, I've NEVER read one I didn't love. This was no exception. Girl Defective is so fantastic. There's mystery, adorable romance, family issues, endearing characters, harsh reality, and it's all told in a dreamy, hazy, summery way that perfectly mimics the confusing thoughts and feelings that Skylark is experiencing.

Australian coming of age story, with quirky record store, haunting murder mystery, odd characters and retro rebellions. A solid story, one I'd recommend for fans of Eleanor and Park.

This book is very charming and quirky! Simmone Howell has a distinct and lighthearted writing style which really made this book comfortable to be in! The characters are all their own unique people and have so many loveable quirks, this is a great young adult read:) I did feel that the mystery may have been a bit pointless at times, as it sort of fizzles out and loses any significance, but in my opinion the characters and their relationships mostly makes up for it:)
