I read this book because of a line from it on my english teacher’s wall: “My meaning simply is, that whatever I have tried to do in life, I have tried with all my heart to do well; that whatever I have devoted myself to, I have devoted myself to completely; that in great aims and in small, I have always been thoroughly in earnest.” This quote and David’s observations of his own life resonate with me so deeply; I have read it over the course of a year, on and off, and my own life events seemed to mirror up somehow with the narrative (minus marriage unfortunately). This is my first Dickens novel and my mind has been opened to his genius ability to write pure emotion so beautifully and, at many times, hilariously! There are certainly times where many pages could’ve been left out, but I am just impressed that someone can have so much to write. This book is definitely one that will stick with me for life and I enjoyed reading it and living through David’s formative years with him.
