This book was very easy to get into. I really enjoyed the story and the humor and the typical Dicken's characters. And, of course, everything worked out in the end. However, it is a very long book! I would recommend it to be read when you feel like you have a long time to commit.

DNF. Stvarno sam pokusala. Uz najbolju volju sam dosla negdje do polovice i jednostavno nisam mogla dalje. Mozda u nekom drugom zivotnom periodu uspijem dovrsiti.

DID NOT FINISH

This was a sad book. Nothing really went right for David.

Well, It's obviously a classic, isn't it?

That said, I felt the picaresque nature of it, and for a memoir, it's abrupt pre-midlife ending, meant it lacked some of what I love about Dickens. It did have plenty of intrigue and grottiness in an England that was old and rotting while expanding and renovating. It did have plenty of the most exquisite characterisation and accurate observation. It did have extraordinarily progressive ideas on women in society, religion, morality, a person's worth and so much more. Of course it did.
But what it lacked for me, in comparison with others of his works, was the multi-layered, enveloped and intertwined narratives and motives of the characters. Heep's machinations were obvious and trundled along as Copperfield lived his life. Unlike other stories, the actions did not so much twist around him, infringe upon him or in many ways affect him at all, other than his sense of fair play and obligation.
It should also be noted that as Copperfield is a cipher for Dickens himself, he is never less than unfailingly upright and honest. Even as a writer with a growing reputtaion he accepts teh responsibility of his fame. Dickens, in midlife is writing his legacy. But I wouldn't begrudge him it.
