Well Dostoevsky, it isn’t you, it’s me. And I do get it that this is a clever book, I get it. But I just didn’t like it. I felt preached too, and the characters in the book didn’t feel like rounded characters, they were ideas, not people. I know that is what Dostoyevsky was doing, but I felt manipulated.
I felt, all the way through, that I wasn’t being given room to think. There was no doubt about what was being said. I prefer books where you are given ideas on the slant and can think them through… where several ideas compete.. Dostoyevsky doesn’t allow for that, he has to have the ideas.

Anyway, I just didn’t enjoy this. But I gave it three stars because I do see what he was doing, it just didn’t do it for me

Ab 70%. I didn't enjoy getting attached to a story line/plot and then being thrown into what felt like a relatively unrelated one.

Disappointed because I’ve really enjoyed Dostoevsky other works and I thought this would be on the same level as crime and punishment due to its fame however that was not the case. The book only got interesting from 400 pages in and it was a flog to get there. The story is centred on 3 sons and their father and you do get to know each brother very well due to the depth of description Dostoevsky puts into the novel. The 3 brothers represent the new changing Russia with the alternative and conflicting views  whilst their father is the collapsing Russia. There are beautiful moments of worldly wisdom as per usual with Dostoevsky. The grand inquisitor bit is the most interesting part to go into deep analysis of. But it just didn’t hit the same as The Idiot or Crime and punishment

Demands your full attention but it’s all worth it in the end

i’m never recommending this to anyone but like i had a good time

A great classic... I'd recommend to anyone seeking a good drama. Very long. Dostoevsky has a great way of making you feel present in a scene. This is probably partially due to his very specific nature of writing. He gives so many details; his writing brinks on long-winded, and can be tiresome at times. The story itself is a great story that could have been told a little faster, but worth reading nonetheless.
