Quite dense (because the topic is, not the writing), but thorough and absolutely worth it. Doesn't just pick a starting point for capitalism to spur to life whole made, but rather explores the specific choices and conditons that shaped the world in order to make the arrival of capitalism *seem* like an inevitable thing when looking back. (To no one's surprise, imperialism, capitalism, racism and land theft all played pretty big roles.)

I can’t articulate an adequate assessment of this analysis. A beautiful historical account how capitalist social property relations compel individuals to adhere to its market principles (contrary to the commercialization model and Malthusian demographic models that sought to explain the appearance of our current form of economic organization).

this is a really good book! very key text that challenges all the arguments that naturalise capitalism and places it within the very specific context without which it may never have come about. i dock it a star bc it is a little dry.

Fascinating, insightful, important. Man, she makes me hate Locke.

Excellent work. The history side of it is completely beyond my means to judge but the basic argument that capitalism is it's own particular social relations and not simply a product of rationalisation or human nature is excellently put.
