What's this? The guy on the cover is dressed, unlike for the previous 4 stories in the series?! *le gasp*

If this series were a single book, this would be the part to race through, because it gets really exciting. The plot switches from monster-of-the-week to the main event, things are uncovered, the good guys and the bad guys are clearly divided, (the right) decisions are made, confessions and confessed and we're heading on quickly to the final confrontation. I might be going out on a limb here, but as there are 6 novellas in this series and it's complete, I assume it will happen soon.

It's fun and exciting - my only problem is with the format, I guess. I don't feel like a series of novellas really work for it, but that might just be me.

There is only one activity I love more than curling up and reading a good book. I'm pretty sure most of you can guess correctly exactly what that activity is but that is NOT what I am here to discuss : )
I have been dying for this book to come out. No joke. My obsession with this series became so bad that I literally, shamelessly BEGGED the author for an ARC and that wonderful woman took pity on me and gifted me with it. Does that act of generosity have any influence on my review? No! You see, Hawke writes amazing stories that just suck you right in the minute you start reading.I am not a fan of posting spoilers but for the first time ever I WANT to post them! I'm so TEMPTED to actually break my no spoiler rule .... But that wouldn't be fair to ruin the book for the rest of you. Instead I'm going to post a small excerpt to whet your appetite:

“Gray turned on his heel and strode away, coat snapping behind him. “Over and over again, your kind have told Caleb ‘NHEs lie.’ It is your dogma, the shield you hide behind, the excuse you make. But it is you mortals who are the liars.”
Gray’s long strides forced John into a jog just to keep up. “I’m not lying, damn it! You have to believe me.”
“No, I do not. Your duty was to kill me. Why would you risk everything to release me?”
John grabbed Gray’s arm, but he would have had as much success at stopping a car with his bare hands. “Just slow down and listen to me for half a second!”
“There is nothing you can say—”

John's answer is a doozie! Each installment just keeps getting better and better. I LOVED every nail biting minute I spent reading this book and you will too ;-)

5 stars. This was the BEST so far. Grey, Caleb and John really show us what their made of as they fight demons and SPECTR agents like the badasses they are.

Oh, so much happens in this book! The clock is ticking for Caleb, his forty days are coming to an end, and if Gray is not exorcised before that, he and Caleb will become one. And he has been taken to a secured facility, where something is definitively wrong.

The moth people is coming upfront into the story, and all the different threads that had been woven in the previous stories are coming together beautifully.

And, oh! the strange three-way relationship between Caleb, Gray and John is yes, strange but marvellous.

This series is simply amazing. Out to listen to the last book... of this part of the story :P

3 1/2 would have been 4. Again really good except that it was the 2 part of a 3 part story, and end in a cliffhanger. This time the demon hunting wasn't even included. This was a total transition story, relationship and SPECTR. After story/book #3, you really have to read the rest as one story. I got the Audible as a 1 credit compilation and that was good. I don't know if I really like the narrator as I read the first 3 before learning about the compilation. I had different voices in my head and don't like Gray's voice much. Still I'm glad to just go from one novella, non-ending to the next. They start right where the last left off.

Eeeee, this book was fantastic!

1. I loved Agent Ward so much. I've been hoping to see more of her, and she is such a badass.

2. I wish this book had been combined with the previous one, because that one was pretty much all set-up, and they were basically two halves of the same narrative arc. Book 4 left me feeling pretty unsatisfied, in terms of the emotional tension and arc - I didn't mind the cliffhanger so much, but some of the other strings left hanging annoyed me to no end. Fortunately, most of that gets worked through here and the story gets to a much better end point.

3. I really, really like the exploration of the relationship dynamics between John, Caleb, and Gray. Gray and Caleb's internal dialogues are hilarious and so well-written. I love it when authors can convince me that their POV characters aren't human. It's hard to do, but Jordan Hawk does a really great job of it with Gray.

The relationship between John, Caleb, and Gray finally comes to a head as the forty day deadline runs out, and it is tremendously satisfying.

The overarching conspiracy of SEPCTR also comes to light as the first series ramps up to its finale.

Super compelling, fast paced, at times heart wrenching, and always satisfying.

Now this has been what I was waiting for since the first novella. Not that I minded the demon hunting leading up to it, but this is really where it gets juicy! More mysteries are solved while introducing new ones to keep me reading. And some resolution between our three main protagonists. Men (and not-demons?) in love and killing demons while solving mysteries is what I came here and this has been the most enjoyable so far. Most of novellas and books along this line just don't have a plot that keeps pace with the other action, but for these it's excellent, especially in this one.
