A Dark Web of Monsters, written by J. Boote, is book four of the Monsters Series. Fair warning: this is a horror book… I should say a splatterpunk book. This book is not suited for everyone, and the trigger warnings must be read going into this one. It is not for the faint of heart. This book will push you to your limits and then push some more. If you have read the other books in the series, you have noticed that they have progressively gotten more intense with each release. This one far surpasses the rest. It’s trauma-inducing. Here, the author explores the world of Hurtcore, alive and thriving deep in the dark web. These are a realistic portrayal of things currently happening under our very noses. You’ve been warned.

The book does not focus on just one story but two horrifying instances. The first introduces you to 14-year-old Lucy Smith, who is an aspiring model. Lucy wants nothing more than to become a famous model. Her parents advised her to be careful and do her research when looking for a legit agency. After researching and speaking to a representative from the agency, Lucy sends a provocative photo without waiting for her parent's approval. Soon, Lucy discovers that the rep named Liz is a monster in disguise. Trapped and blackmailed, Lucy is threatened to follow her demands for more explicit material, or she will send an altered photo to her friends and family.

The second story is that of 12-year-old Angela. Young Angela was supposed to be picked up at school by her uncle, but she never made it home. She vanishes without a trace. Angela’s parents, aunt, and uncle alert the police, and a search begins for the missing girl. Her world will never be the same when Angela wakes up in a dank basement with a dirty mattress and video camera. Despite her attempts to escape, she will have to endure sadistic and horrendous torture. Will she survive this to tell her story? Will we discover who the monsters are?

Everything that is depicted in this book is trauma-inducing. It’s vile, disgusting, abhorrent, repugnant… I can go on and on. Knowing this exists in real life is terrifying, and no one is safe. The author does an amazing job of capturing these monstrosities. I’m sure people will sit there and wonder… “J, how do you sleep at night with this floating around in your head?!” Hurtcore isn’t a topic that isn’t often talked about. Is the saying true? What you don’t know can’t hurt you?

Thank you to J. Boote for gifting me an eARC of A Dark Web of Monsters. I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Brutal and powerful with a story that will make you wince but want to continue. 5/5

This Monsters book, which is the fourth in the series, follows Angela as she gets abducted and locked away, but that's just the start of things to come which will often be depraved, horrific, and disgusting.

If you've read J. Boote's other books then you'll know what to expect, but for me, this is the best in the series so far. The characters are great, and the story is captivating, but the levels of violence really make this an extreme horror story that I loved to read.

If you're a fan of extreme horror then this is a book for you.
