fell in love with the MC's, especially Hani! I loved the different POV's and I felt like the author did such a good job building tension and romance between the MC's. It was really cool to read about Korean folklore - I'm glad there weren't English translations or even a glossary since the story was so immersive and including those would have felt like the story was solely for people outside the culture. I'm so excited to read the next book in the series!

Love this epic romance featuring so many Korean folklore characters!
4.5 because I wish that the female characters got a little bit more development or emotional exploration into their quick decisions. It felt like we only got that when the two main femmes were having intense experiences about men or with male characters.
Big shout out to slit faced woman making a notable surprise appearance !!!

this book was surprisingly very entertaining, without necessarily having a story of huge impact that you'll think about every single day. it's a good time! it had me hooked!!
it's heavily based in korean mythology, which is what interested me the most, though it lacks introductions most of the time to those unaware of the legends and its characters, the little i knew came from korean series and games i watched, played beforehand. if you're not too annoyed with the possibility of being lost here and there, give it a chance. i find that not knowing and discovering it as you go has its charms too.
the writing is very episode-ish, and at times it annoyed me (whenever the author wants you to know the stakes are high, there will be a curse word!). the banter, carried by the haters-to-lovers romance, is petty, childish, overall kinda ridiculous, which works given this is a fantasy book. i cant help giving it a pass because i was entertained.
hani, charming, compassionate and fun, was to me the soul of this book, character wise, even though seokga feels slightly better fleshed out. the thing about this book is that you could feel an earnest heart in it even if it was just the taste of it, from how the author does try to add humanity to both of main characters, a god and a gumiho. there are inklings of stories familiar to all of us in them. i do wish there was more of that exploration, of their inner emotions.. without it, it felt cliché, surface level, and too emotional way too fast.
at the same time when i think about how the author would exactly be able to do that, i realise the book would probably have to have another 200 pages, and im not sure that's their intention, even if i think there will be a sequel. for what it is, i still think it's worth it.
lastly, there was a REALLY weird bit where the main characters ask each other how many kids they've had since they're both so old as inhuman creatures, and though i get it, it's obviously an excuse to try and gauge at their past romantic endeavours.... was there really no better way to do it? it brought such an uncomfortable mood to the book, it's an overly specific detail but i HAD to talk about this somewhere.

I feel like there was a mismatch between my expectations for this novel and what it really contained.
I heard 1500+ year old gumiho and fallen god and expected drama, amoral characters and higher stakes.
Instead I got 17 year old level banter and snark, plotting that wouldn't fool a high schooler and flashing neon signs telling me tropes were going to occur. One bed !!! Kiss for plot !!!
The stakes and writing picked up around the final confrontation but it was too little too late and didn't fit the rest of the novel.
Probably won't be reading the sequel, it works better as an open-ended happy-ish conclusion imo.
