I was pleasantly surprised by this story. The movie adaptation is absolutely watered down and wrung out compared to the book. Going in, I was a little wary of both the male author and the male narrator's pov, but I found it sufficiently well-rounded while also feeling like a unique character. It did feel a little long-winded, and I questioned the message or theme quite a bit, but overall, it was a perfectly fine read. Unlike the movie, it's not a romcom, or a zombie/post-apocalypse story. I'd describe it more as YA speculative literary fiction, and recommend it as a sort of bridge from genre fiction to literary.

3.5. I loved the original take on zombies but I wasn’t really feeling the relationship.

Eh. I got through this one quickly enough, but I mostly read it because I really love the movie and it just didn't hold up! R's internal voice isn't particularly compelling, and I didn't root for any of the characters. The whole thing was just pretty forgettable, if I'm honest.

Most books that are semi-based off Romeo and Juliet feel the need to scream about it in every page. This one does not. And that is only part of what makes this beautifully witty and hopeful book so amazing. It combines irony with sincerity, gore and sweet gestures and many other opposites to really drive the message home. I'm not quite sure what the message is yet. I'll keep thinking about it.

Story from the viewpoint of a zombie, R, who is not quite like the other zombies.  He can't remember his past and he does eat the living but for some reason he decides to save Julie during one of his hunting trips.  Interesting twist to the zombie story.  Parts fall short on plot but of course you have suspend disbelief to read this type of story.  Recommend.
