My first exposure to this story was the (excellent) 1978 film, and when I read this years later I think I was expecting that story. This does follow the outline of the film (including who-dunnit), however some details are different and the humor is almost entirely absent. So in my mind, that film adaptation will always be the winner (if you want a faithful adaptation, see the BBC Poirot series with David Suchet.)

This is a Hercule Poirot mystery that reunites him with Colonel Race (who appears in 4 Christie books, 2 of which are solo outings without Poirot.) Recreating a bit of the atmosphere of [b:Murder on the Orient Express|853510|Murder on the Orient Express (Hercule Poirot, #10)|Agatha Christie|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1486131451l/853510._SY75_.jpg|2285570], an American heiress named Linnet Ridgeway Doyle takes a honeymoon cruise down the Nile on a boat full of enemies and winds up dead. Was it her new husband? His jilted fiance, who is also Linnet's former best friend? Her shady attorney? That anarchist guy? And in the meantime, the body count keeps rising. Stay tuned for the big reveal, in a genteel drawing room full of suspects in formal wear the way Christie likes to do it.

I want to take a moment to talk about the movie, just because it's one of my favorites. The all-star cast includes Peter Ustinov as Poirot (a role he would play several times but this was his first and best appearance), David Niven, Mia Farrow, Angela Lansbury, Jack Warden, Maggie Smith, and Bette Davis.

Bette. Davis.

Really, the whole cast is brilliant and is clearly having a ball:

I know I can never go wrong with Agatha Christie and Hercule Poirot if I want a guaranteed good read. And true enough, she never lets me down.

The vast number of passengers on board the ship was confusing at first, but I got used to it. And while the story started out slow and it was quite a few chapters before the murder actually happened, I couldn't put it down.

Hercule Poirot was once again flawless. Cocky, sharp, intelligent but what stood out in this particular mystery was how human he was. He understood the human psyche, showed kindness and mercy, and even played matchmaker.

For me, the greatest strength and main point of Death On The Nile wasn't the murder, reveal or trying to figure out whodunit. It was about human psychology, love and the lengths people are willing to go for love. This is very unlike previous works of Agatha Christie's that I have read but this is also exactly why I'm such a fan of hers. There's always so much heart and soul in each story and character, always more than meets the eye.

This definitely lived up to its hype imo😫 As another review states it does start off kinda slow, but usually while this could deter my interest Agatha kept me interested. Also, everything flows. Later at the end of the story there are so many clear connections to events/details earlier in the book. She's such a good storyteller. There are a lot of characters, and some people might think it's too complex, but it makes things all the more captivating. I appreciate how she always has good characterization and every character becomes vital to the story in some way.

I was literally whispering out loud to myself while trying to finish the little remainder of the book bc I kept wondering is so and so the murderer? No way is it ____? This book is so good, I think it's become one of my favs from herπŸ™ None of the ppl I suspected to be the culprit was actually the culprit, she had me fooled again lol. I finally figured it out partially when I had like 20 pages left and only by hints Poirot gave.

Also appreciate:
-the historical/location references πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡¬
-the references to her other works

I don't think I have any particular strong complaints on the story? I think I'm satisfied w the ending too.

too predictable

So , I'm in love. I was hooked up the entire time I was reading the book. I loved the philosophical approach on love , crime and the woman place in the society. My brain was trying to figure out the suspects and I started thinking what motivation for murder each person would have. Ahhh , it is sooooo good.
I haven't rated it 5/5 stars because now I am expecting the next Agatha Christie book I will read to make me fall in love even more with her books and her writing style to once again impress me.

I quite enjoyed listening to Kenneth Branagh read this book. I knew who did it fairly early but didn’t know how until Poirot spilled the details. Quite fun.
