This was an interesting book. I loved the format, and I loved how every chapter was titled. The shortness of the chapters made it so quick to get through. I almost finished it in one day, if I hadn't started at 5pm. I really enjoyed this, and I learned quite a bit, too. You don't--at least, I don't--often picture women as being abusers. I suppose that comes from bias, being a woman and hearing for so many years that men are the abusers, the ones to be scared of. But this woman's ex-girlfriend is FREAKY!! And not in any sort of good way. It seriously felt fake, through some parts of this story, because of how insane she was. It felt like I was reading one of those Lifetime movies, like Sleeping with the Enemy. Very good and very entertaining, but also very sad. I'm glad the author is in a much better place now.

As a general rule memoir's are harder to read, because knowing it is a true story makes it more painful and you are hyper aware that it is a real world problem/situation. In the dream house is no exception, if anything it is even more difficult to read because of the themes dealt with.

Carmen Maria Machado's writing is phenomenal, her ability to tell such a painful story in an engaging way is amazing.

It definitely deserves all the praise it got, but it's definitely not a easy book to read.
