This was an ok, but not particularly memorable, read for me. I received it as a free First Reads book last year from Amazon Prime and finally got around to reading it this summer. There were parts I enjoyed, such as the friendship aspect of a group of different moms working together to stop a predator who is blackmailing one of them. I would have enjoyed this novel more if it was edited down to the 300 page realm, as it definitely dragged a lot until the very end, which felt rushed, and it did not need to be over 400 pages.

This was a fun mix of adult Nancy drew and a heartwarming open letter to mothers and finding friends as adults. I enjoyed the ride.
Fine, not bad not great. The ending seemed rushed and tied up super quickly, while the rest of the book went on a little too long. The characters made so little progress in so much time. It’s a slow paced book with almost no mystery. It’s more of “we know who did it but we don’t know how to pin it on him” rather than a mystery. They completely ignore police procedure. No cop would sign off on civilians putting themselves in danger like that.
The writing was 90% good contemporary writing. There were some vocab choices that felt dated or not true to how people talk. There were a few good jokes but I wouldn’t call it a funny book.
Ainsley’s secret isn’t that big of a deal and I couldn’t bring myself to be that concerned with it. I was way more concerned about the current potential crimes the bad guy may be up to, but they were more worried about stuff he did 20 years ago. I wanted them to pull the niece out of basketball like yesterday and they were just not concerned at all. It’s like the book couldn’t decide if it was going to have high stakes and danger or not.
