This book reminded me of the way I got sucked into Ally Carter books in middle school, with a delicious extra Les Mis flavor to it. I'm upset I didn't know this history before; I'm so glad Sepetys is sharing it in such an accessible and engaging way.

This was a good account of a teenager’s view of Soviet-era Romania. I didn’t know much about the time period and it was surreal learning what they went through. I like how the author clearly aims for authenticity and has a really thoughtful note at the end. It reminded me of why I love historical fiction and of it’s capacity to bring future change.

I don’t even have words to describe the impact this book has had on me. Reading is a window to the past and to the truth and to being a better person - and this book I’d probably the strongest account of that sentiment that I have ever experienced. It is fiction, but really, it’s not. This heart-wrenching and emotional account of Romania’s history is a must read for everyone, thought-provoking and eye-opening in so many ways. I can’t recommend this book enough. I just wish it was longer!
