I actually liked this one a little better than the last few that I have read in the 39 Clues series. I don't know if my expectations lowered so much that this impressed me, but it may also have been that the story was rather straightforward and it stood alone rather well as an individual story instead of getting bogged down in stuff that happened in other books. I thought the puzzles were well done, and even though most were not possible to crack by a novice reader, they were solved in a believable enough way in the book. There was enough forward advancement in the greater story to make this book feel like a part of something bigger. 3 1/2 stars

The thing I really like about this children's series is that it "dabbles" in history from all over the world. They just tell a little about the people and places that they travel too, but it is enough that if it interests you, you will want to learn more.

The description of this book makes it seem like Dan and Amy's Cahill branch is the main plot of the volume, but it's revealed in just a few lines at the very end. So don't expect this story is going to give you valuable information on the fallout of the discovery. This is more about the events following the death of Irina Spatsky, and the shaping up of the Kabras as the series's main villains.

This time, we get to learn about South Africa, and particularly about Apartheid. And I am so glad that it's Dan whom is into the location, because if he had been running around, complaining about having to learn this stuff...yikes. Not a good message there. Amy takes a bit of a backseat as she deals with her own emotions (and I honestly can't recall the issue), and Nellie seems to waive away notions that she might be some sort of trained agent (though who knows, maybe that's what an agent WOULD do), leaving the women of the story a bit disenfranchised.

Overall, it's an okay addition to the series. It does leave me quite excited for the next book, when the Cahill branch revelation becomes important. I just wish they hadn't used it for so much advertising here.

This book was eh. Not my favorite but not my least favorite in the series. It was a little difficult to get into and hard to make sense of at times.
